Finding Our Worth in Christ and Not in the Approval of Others

Written by

As a Christian woman trying to balance being a good wife, good mom, and a good homemaker, all while pursuing a life that is constantly growing in Christ, can seem exhausting.  At times, I feel like I’ll never be good enough.

I will get angry and bitter toward my husband.  I will speak to my kids in an unkind way, while inadvertently teaching them to treat each other that way.  I will look around at my home and see the dust collecting on the bookshelf.  The feeling to do it all can be overbearing in ways that lead to having negative thoughts toward our family members, friends, and even ourselves.

It’s tempting to wallow in self pity and tell ourselves that it’s just too hard.  We begin to feel unworthy and lousy at these tasks that God has called us to do.

I think this is something a lot of women struggle with on a daily basis.  We scroll through social media and see the pictures of happy families, siblings loving on each other, latest DIY projects, delicious recipes, perfectly organized space, the list could go on.  We like to show others what’s going well in our lives.  But it’s rare that we share our struggles.

So, how do we find the energy to keep pushing forward when it seems like we are failing?

It all begins with our motives.  Why do we serve?  Would we rather scroll through Facebook then get on the floor and play with our children?  When was the last time we kissed our husband just because?  When was the last time we thanked God for the clothes that need to be folded and put away?

If we truly want to find our worth in Christ then we must learn to set aside our selfishness. Let’s stop comparing ourselves to others that seem to have it all together because in reality none of us are “good enough”.

We mess up and sin everyday.  But thankfully, we have a loving God that forgives us even when we yell at our kids or argue with our husband.

Our true happiness and worth is only found in Christ and through doing His will.

Jesus paid the ultimate price for us so that we may have eternal life.  We need to offer everything to Him.  Our money, homes, relationships, and our whole life.  We were created to glorify God not man.

We must stop caring about what others think of us and do our duties well with a cheerful, servant’s heart.

I accept that I am not as good as I ought to be.  But through His goodness I can be better.  I can be a better mom, a better wife, and a better homemaker.

I can see the blessings through my labor and hard work.  I can change my attitude and commit to see God’s gifts even on my worst days.

Ephesians 6:6-7 says,

“Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”

If you are feeling like a failure today then go to the feet of Jesus and pour out your heart to Him.  Ask Him to show you your worth through His eyes.  Fight the temptation to compare yourself to others that seem to have it all together.  Find who God created you to be and embrace it.

No matter what is going on or how difficult this life can get.  “The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him.” (Psalm 28:7)

How has God reminded you of your worth recently?  Was it through a mentor, a song, or verse?  I would love to hear about it in the comments below!

As an African-American in this world, this truth is relevant for me. I go back to John 3:16.

Great reminders. When we think of what Jesus did for us, it is hard not to see your worth in God’s eyes. I really believe that when we see our own worth we are able to love others so much better. Thanks for the encouraging post!

  5. So true! Comparison leads us to unhappy places, either despair or pride. We’ve been going through Ephesians as a church. I’ve been encouraged by chapter 2:1-9. How humbling yet marvelous to remember that I’ve been saved by grace, through faith, which is a gift from God. No boasting or despair allowed for me, because it”s all about what Jesus has done. Wonderfully liberating! Thanks fir the reminder.

Such a good reminder! One of my favorite verses is Ps. 46:10. “Be still and know that I a God.” When I am looking to God for my affirmation I stop striving and rest in His acceptance and love. Great post!
