Decorating with Deeper Meaning

decorating with meaning

I find value in decorating my home. I found out that printing photos on a canvas print gives vintage appeal to my home!

While it is a “temporal pursuit,” God Himself is the very author of beauty!

In fact, He lovingly sewed every creative possibility into the fibers of the world He made from the beginning of time. Think about that for a second.

He is glorified when we acknowledge, appreciate and express the creativity He placed in our beings. He is glorified, that is, if we do it unto Him, with a heart of praise, and never over-valuating the things of the world.

We don’t give our physical home importance that it simply does not possess, but we can have a little fun with it if we want (you may not)! In that way, we have an opportunity to bless our family with an inviting, homey atmosphere using the gifts and desires God has given us.

And I especially enjoy decorating in a way that turns my attention back to my Creator and Savior. But what does that look like?

For me, it means decorating with scripture or with elements that hold special meaning. I know from my background as a teacher that “environment text” is a powerful learning tool. When we see something repeatedly over time, we almost can’t help but ingest it deeply.

Kids’ Rooms

_D4B9273-2When my oldest daughter moved into her big girl room, God put a scripture on my heart for her wall. I searched high and low and eventually found a vinyl decal of it.

It reads,

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.” Colossians 3:12

You know what? She owns that verse. Now, two years later, she asks me to read it to her frequently, has memorized much of it, and initiates many conversations about its content.

Slowly, over time, it has become interwoven into her expectations about life. It leads her to think about deep spiritual concepts in a natural way. I love that.

My Room

I recently redecorated my bedroom with items from DaySpring’s Everlasting Light Collection..

These decorations are beautifully crafted to convey a specific message –the message that God is light and has made us to be His light for the world.

Each morning when I make my bed and carefully arrange these items, I am filled with gratitude for God’s light in my life and the privilege of carrying that forth to those in darkness. What a powerful reminder for each and every morning!

A sunbeam mirror is the centerpiece over my headboard, with rich-colored mango wood and a scrawling inscription across the glass that reads, “You will shine…like stars in the sky.  Phil. 2:15”

Two burlap and gold pillows say, “Shine Your Light” and “He counts the stars & calls them all by name Ps 147:4.”

Shimmering circle garland further emphasizes and broadcasts the message of God’s eternal light throughout the room.

It does stir me. It does matter. God Himself implores us to makes scripture a part of our daily lives and environments.

“And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children… Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deauteronomy 6:5-9 (NLT)

It doesn’t have to be fancy, but make a point today to add some scripture to your home, even if that means printing something on an index card and placing it by your sink. This helps us renew our minds in truth.

How do you place scripture around your home to encourage you and your family to see what truly matters?

I printed my favorite hymns and scriptures and framed them for a display on my bedroom wall. I also use index cards around the house and switch them out periodically,

  2. Eliza says:

I start every day with Psalm 118:24 ‘this is the day The Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.’

I want to find a way to incorporate that in my decor so the whole family can be reminded to find joy in every day!

How good this is! And I do love your daughter’s verse. What a great way to lead her. When my mother passed away one thing that she owned was highly valued by several of us–her plaque “Delight Thyself in the Lord and He Shall Give Thee the Desires of Thine Heart” . I remember the day as a young teen that I looked at it on the wall, really noticed it and realized what it meant.

    • That is such a neat story Linda! I pray that for my kids. I know they could also begin to view it as part of the furniture and not deeply notice, but I’m asking and trusting the Holy Spirit will bring the realization. Thanks so much for sharing!
